Malaysia Travel Hacks: How to Spoke with Malaysian Friendly

this one is mamak, mamak also got slang you know!

I am locals. I had seen that Malaysian (refer to Malaysia people) tend to use their own style of language, yes our official language known as Bahasa Malaysia, but you know when people become creative and they tried various way to make our communication language is comfortable, modern looks, ermm or more stylish, perhaps. In this entry i will help you to understand several language slang spoke by Malaysian, in advance you will feel less awkward when visiting this country. right huh?

1. Usage of 'LAH' words


Almost everything Malaysian will end up their sentences with 'lah' words. This is truly informal language among us and we are glad to use it. Still did not get? i give you an examples...

Situation 1

A: "Hey Mr.B, where do we get our dinner today?

B: " Lets try that restaurant'lah', i heard their seafood is good, too good"

Got it? here another example...

Situation 2

A: "Gosh, i forget to pay the parking ticket"

B: "Come on, later you pay'lah'"

See, 'lah' words is almost universal word, you can put it in any sentences as you wish, its pretty simple, yeah i know, that why i called this as hacks...;-)

2. 'BRO' the word that you should greet your friends or anybody


Ermm, i love this, most of us already mentioned that bro is originated from brother, means you should use it within your siblings or your close acquaintances. But in Malaysia, you can use 'bro' everywhere you like to anyone you like, from cleaner people, to executive people,you able to use it without hesitation. You can use to the people you don't know who also. its free, and Malaysian truly aware that situation. We use 'bro' to talk to strangers, asking something also shows how you people, the tourist really friendly with the locals. Here the examples...

Situation 1

A: "Bro, do you get some drinks?"

B: "Buy yourself lah bro, why asking me!"

See, i can use 'lah' and 'bro' in single sentences, how easy right.

situation 2

A: "Uhm, sorry bro, can i ask where is nearby police station

B: "Uhm, i actually don't know coz i also tourist, sorry bro"

P/S: Always mind, bro for male and sometimes we use sis to female.

3. Mixed Language


I am admit that i are not fluently English spoken. When you are here, you may get to know some Malay words to make the conversation easier with Malaysian. Yes, although some people are good in English, but you may found the people where their English is at mid range level, and they tend to mix between bahasa malaysia and English, so that is we called mixed language. Nothing wrong here, just to inform that if you heard some strange words when Malaysian communicate with you in English, you must know that strange words is bahasa malaysia.

here the examples..

Situation 1

A: "Sir can i know how to get the train to Kuala Lumpur?"

B: "Urm, i think, you go to that people, and you tanya (ask) the people"

Clearly, its mixed. Another tips when you meets with these people is to try asking the same question repeatedly. Automatically, the person that you ask will try his best to give the answer in full English. (We always try very hard)

4. Body Language


People love body language, it make communication easier and understandable, so do Malaysians. If you have trouble to express something by words, or Malaysian are just not able to interpret you correctly, just do a simple body language tricks, it helps, cause Malaysians would preferably understand it, we also communicate by that way sometimes, and its positive!

Of course, you must make your movement really obvious though!

So that is some travel hacks on how to spoke with Malaysian, this hacks will increase your confident and you will easily become friendly with the people, its true! you should try it when you come to this country. Welcome to Malaysia peeps!!
